Common Reasons Vehicle Wraps Fail, And How We Avoid Them

Most vehicle wraps don’t fail because the vinyl itself is bad. They fail due to mistakes made during preparation, installation, or maintenance. Understanding these common failure points helps you make better decisions about who you trust with your fleet or personal vehicles.
Here are the most common reasons wraps fail in the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, and Hunter region, and exactly how we prevent them at Big Colour:
1. Poor Surface Preparation
This is the number one cause of edge lifting and premature wrap failure. Any wax, polish, silicone, or road grime left on the paint will prevent the adhesive from forming a proper bond.
We follow a rigorous multi-stage cleaning process on every vehicle. This includes clay bar decontamination to remove bonded contaminants, followed by thorough cleaning with Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) and Avery Surface Cleaner using lint-free cloths. Every panel is inspected before vinyl is applied.
2. Over-Stretching the Vinyl
Excessively stretching cast vinyl into deep recesses and compound curves is a very common mistake. When the material is overstretched, it loses some of its memory and tries to shrink back to its original shape over time, causing wrinkles, bubbling, or edge lift.
We carefully manage how much the film is stretched and select the right material for each vehicle’s body lines and contours.
3. Inadequate Post-Heating
This is one of the most common technical failures we see. After the vinyl is laid down, the adhesive must be properly activated with heat. If the edges and seams are not post-heated correctly, the bond remains weak and vulnerable to lifting.
We post-heat all edges, seams, and complex curves to between 95°C and 105°C using a heat gun and temperature probe. This creates a significantly stronger molecular bond between the vinyl and the paint surface.
4. Poor Cutting and Trimming Techniques
Bad trimming causes two major problems: either the blade cuts into the vehicle’s paint, or too much vinyl is left on the edge, creating a thick lip that catches and lifts over time.
We use lining tape to protect paint edges and make precise, clean cuts. This protects your paint while creating a smooth, secure finish that is far less likely to lift.
5. Lack of Proper Aftercare
Even a perfectly installed wrap will fail early if it’s not looked after. Bird droppings, tree sap, and road grime left sitting on the surface, especially on hot days, can etch into the vinyl and cause permanent damage.
